About Dalton, Georgia
Dalton, Georgia is located just off I-75 in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Approximately 60 miles north of Atlanta and 20 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dalton is rich in industry, heritage and spirit. Better known as the 'Carpet Capital of the World", Dalton, Georgia is home to the largest carpet manufacturers in the world. Due to the boom in the floorcovering industry in the 1990's, Dalton's population has diversified, creating a more culturally diverse community with more unique restaurants, shopping and special events.
Who could describe Dalton, Georgia without mentioning the railroad? Dalton is the only place in Georgia, outside of Atlanta, where two different rail lines, CSX and Norfolk-Southern, converge and run side-by-side. Rail fans come form all over the country to watch the trains in Historic Downtown Dalton. The city of Dalton is currently in the planning process for the restoration of the Norfolk-Southern depot on south Hamilton Street. Potential ideas for the use of this facility include a museum, welcome center/shop and meeting space. Plans for a viewing platform are also being developed.
